Welcome home

After almost 80 years, three works lost during the war are returning to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister

The painting 'Campagna Landscape' by Jan Baptist Weenix (1621−1660) had been on loan to the Chemnitz district headquarters since 1937. It was evacuated to Rübenau, Erzgebirge, during World War II. After the end of the war, the Soviet command requested it to be taken to the apartment of a general. From there, it did not return to the gallery for decades to come.

Über die USA

It made its way to the Netherlands through the United States and other stops. Willem Jan Hoogsteder, owner of the art dealership Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder in The Hague, decided to buy the painting from its previous possessors in order to donate it to the Dresden State Art Collections. Almost 80 years after its disappearance, Jan Baptist Weenix' "Campagna Landscape" returned to the Gallery in October 2023.
